Stakeholders Series scrutinises EU pharma reform

On 7 December, ALDE Party hosted the next event of its Stakeholder Series to discuss key issues around the European Union’s pharmaceutical legislation.

The event, entitled “Future Regulation for Medicines in the EU”, was hosted in collaboration with Bristol Myers Squibb, and explored how operating conditions in the EU can support future innovation.

Opening the discussion, Ondřej Knotek MEP questioned if the European Commission’s proposed reform of the EU pharmaceutical legislation will suffice to enable Europe as an industry leader.

“If we see this new geopolitical set-up asking us to be much more self-sufficient, and we look at the data, we have a gap. Other successful markets are faster, and there are much more investments in the US when it comes to biotech and the pharmaceutical business,” he said.

“We would like to have the answers if the proposed steps will be sufficient to increase the affordability of medicines to our European citizens, maintain Europe as an attractive place to live and also competitive in terms of technology and economics globally.”

ALDE Party’s Stakeholder Series brings together partners and stakeholders from across European industry for discussions on key issues surrounding Europe.

This event marked the fourth and final instalment in 2023, after previous events on sustainable packaging and recycling, fuel decarbonisation and medical innovation.
