In light of increased Russian attacks against civilians in Ukraine, Renew Europe has initiated a cross-party statement calling to intensify EU and national military support for Ukraine.
Renew Europe Acting President and ALDE Party Vice-President Malik Azmani MEP (VVD, NL) co-signed a joint statement with four other political groups in the European Parliament, ahead of the next EU leaders’ summit on 1 February.
Renew Europe calls for increased, long-term support that matches the needs of the Ukrainian Army, and secured a debate on the topic in the agenda of the European Parliament’s plenary session.
“We need to respond to intensified Russian attacks against civilians in Ukraine and give the Ukrainian Army the support it needs. This requires a step change in EU and national military support from member states. The dictators of the world are watching carefully. Ukraine’s security is Europe’s security,” said Azmani.
Nathalie Loiseau MEP (Renaissance, FR), Chair of the European Parliament Subcommittee on Security and Defence, added: "We need to live up to our commitments and support Ukraine not only as long as it takes but also as much as it takes.
“Ukraine is the only country bravely fighting Russian aggression. But we are all facing Russian aggressiveness. We cannot allow Russia to win. Supporting Ukraine is our most obvious security guarantee.”
