On 2 March, one of the newest ALDE member parties Viðreisn in Iceland held a party congress with topics such as Europe, freedom and environmental issues featured high on the day’s agenda.
Party leader Þorgerður Katrínar Gunnarsdóttur commented on the significance of the European Union during her speech: “It is sometimes forgotten that the heart of Europe is much more than the four freedoms. We should remind ourselves of the importance of peace, which is the ground from which the European co-operation originally emerged.”
One of the key speakers of the day was the ALDE Party Vice-President Timmy Dooley from Fianna Fáil. His speech focused on the impact of Brexit for the European Union and the neighbourging nations as well as the importance of European inter-state cooperation.
The event culminated in the party’s four members of parliament reappearing on stage as ABBA and performing a version of Mamma Mia that had been translated into Icelandic in reference to liberalism and the Viðreisn party. The full lyrics can be read and enjoyed here.
