On 24 April the European Parliament's Committe on Agriculture voted on mechanisms to better support young farmers.
Only 6% of farmers in the European Union are under the age of 35, compared to a third over the age of 65. To have a competitive and future-proof agriculture in Europe, young farmers must be supported. That is why, the European Parliament wants to set out better conditions for young farmers when it comes to finance, bureaucracy, access to land and training and innovation.
"I want to create opportunities for all enthusiastic people who want to get into farming. Passionate new entrants and young farmers are the sector's future," commented Jan Huitema MEP.
