COP or FLOP? Renew Europe steps up climate action

Renew Europe supports the commitment of the EU Council to take a strong stance at COP27.  As the energy crisis and effects of climate change are more strongly felt worldwide, it is time to step up our game to achieve the Paris climate goals. The EU must take the lead on climate globally and help other countries start their green transitions.

In September, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on COP27, with the demands:

  • Close the emission gap to achieve the ambition to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius
  • All countries need to play their part, and major emitters are urged to set up robust and ambitious CO2 – reduction policies
  • All countries need to update their national emission pledges and for the major emitters to set up robust and ambitious CO2 – reduction policies

Renew Europe is committed to act immediately to protect the health of our environment and our children, while also providing new opportunities. We should be guided by science and the knowledge that we have the means to address this crisis, and it’s possible to do so while protecting citizens' livelihoods.

A more sustainable Europe will mean better health and standards of living for all Europeans. That is why it is critical that Europe does everything possible to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 at the latest.

Renew Europe is acting on climate and is fully committed to the ambitions of the Paris Agreement. The Group has successfully pushed for an ambitious EU climate law with effective instruments to raises the targets for EU greenhouse gas emission reduction to at least 57 % by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

For Renew Europe, the green transition goes hand in hand with delivering economic prosperity and social fairness and is working for a transition that fosters innovation and provides opportunities in all corners of the European Union in a way that is fair and just. To this end, the Group strives for more free and fair-trade agreements to secure jobs in Europe and export European standards and values and aims to make sure the EU delivers on its ambition to tackle new challenges ahead.
