Liberals discuss renewable future at Energy Forum

Liberal leaders, key stakeholders and industry experts convened in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland for ALDE Party’s Liberal Energy Forum on 8-9 February. Around 300 participants attended the conference focusing on the future of the European Union’s energy policy to combat climate change and boost sustainable economic growth.

Liberals react as Hungarian President resigns

On 10 February, Hungary’s President Katalin Novák from Viktor Orbán’s ruling party Fidesz announced her resignation after revelations about her role in a child sexual abuse case. Momentum Mozgalom members including party leader Anna Donáth MEP and Dávid Bedő MP led a demonstration in front of the Sándor Palace in Budapest, the official residence of the Hungarian President.

IDS mark 34th anniversary at party Congress

On 10 February, ALDE Party member Istarski Demokratski Sabor (IDS) in Croatia held a party Congress in Poreč, Croatia. IDS president Dalibor Paus addressed members in a keynote speech which set out the party’s priorities, including the decentralisation of Croatia and a bigger degree of independence over Istria’s own health care, education and social policies.

ALDE Party welcomes Hans van Baalen Fellow

Last week, ALDE Party welcomed Laia Comerma Calatayud as the inaugural Hans van Baalen Fellow on EU-Taiwan Relations. Laia was selected in October as the recipient of the Scholarship in memoriam of van Baalen, ALDE Party’s late former President, a staunch supporter of Taiwanese freedom and democracy, and will work with ALDE Party’s Research and Empowerment Unit.

Zero tolerance for Russian interference and corruption

Renew Europe strongly condemns Russia’s continuous efforts to undermine EU democracy by reportedly recruiting MEPs as influence agents. Following a request by the Group, MEPs adopted a resolution noting their deep concern about the Kremlin’s efforts to create a system of dependencies by European political parties, who then act as amplifiers of Russian propaganda.

Renew Europe: Investigate Serbian election claims

Renew Europe reiterates its call for a full and transparent international investigation of all reported election irregularities and claims of fraud in Serbia’s parliamentary and local elections. The joint international observation mission noted instances including the misuse of public resources, intimidation and pressure on voters, ballot-box stuffing and vote-buying.
