Strack-Zimmermann nominated as ALDE Party lead candidate

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann has been nominated by FDP to become ALDE Party's lead candidate for the upcoming European elections in June. The nomination is backed up by ALDE Party Co-Presidents Ilhan Kyuchyuk and Timmy Dooley, their respective political parties, and other ten parties within our political family.

Liberals retain seats in Portuguese snap elections

On 10 March, Portugal held snap legislative elections to elect all 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic. ALDE Party member Iniciativa Liberal (IL) achieved its best-ever result in national elections with 5.1% of the popular vote, retaining its eight seats in the Assembly and cementing its place as the fourth strongest political force in the country.

DP announce full list for European elections

On 7 March, ALDE Party member Demokratesch Partei (DP) in Luxembourg announced the full list for the European elections in June. Led by Charles Goerens MEP, DP’s current representative in the European Parliament, and 28-year-old Amela Skenderović, the party has a gender-balanced list of six candidates.

Slovak liberals confirm full European election list

On 6 March, Progresívne Slovensko (PS) published the party’s full list of candidates for the European elections in June. Lead candidate and former Slovak Prime Minister Ľudovít Ódor will be followed by Ľubica Karvašová, a diplomat who worked as an adviser to the Slovak Prime Minister for EU affairs between 2020-23, and current PS and European Parliament Vice-President Martin Hojsík MEP.

Liberalerna launch European campaign at Congress

On 9 March, Liberalerna held a party Congress to launch its campaign for the European elections in June, days after Sweden formally joined NATO as its 32nd member following approval from all members. Party leader Johan Pehrson highlighted the role that liberals played in the process, explaining how Liberalerna started taking a stand for the country’s NATO membership back in 1999.

Belgian liberals join forces for federal elections

ALDE Party members Mouvement Réformateur and Open VLD will present a joint list for the Brussels consistuency in the upcoming Belgian federal election on 9 June. The agreement reinforces a long-standing partnership between the two parties who have led the last four Belgian governments with Prime Ministers Charles Michel, Sophie Wilmès and Alexander De Croo.

Parliament backs pioneering law for zero-emission buildings

On 12 March, Renew Europe welcomed the European Parliament’s approval of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, a key driver of the Fit for 55 package. Renew Europe played a pivotal role in the negotiations, delivering a balance between sustainability and competitiveness, placing a new "renovation era" as the core strategy towards more sustainable buildings.

Renew Europe: Better monitoring yields healthier soils

Renew Europe welcomed the approval of the Soil Monitoring and Resilience Law by the European Parliament Committee on Environment. Up to 70% of all soils in Europe are currently in an unhealthy state, and there is a lack of comprehensive data on soil health from monitoring, resulting in a lack of consistency and comparability across the EU.
