ALDE Party condemns Russia’s provocative recognition of occupied areas and calls for EU sanctions

Responding to the latest events, ALDE Party acting co-Presidents Senator Timmy Dooley and Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP issued a statement condemning Russia’s provocative recognition of the occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk, calling for the global democratic world to impose swift, massive, and targeted sanctions on the Russian Federation, and for the EU to increase its support to the democratically elected administration of Ukraine.

Liberals call for European and transatlantic unity in the face of the Russian threat

Last week, liberals took an active role during the 58th edition of the Munich Security Conference. With the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine very present, liberal leaders such as European Council President Charles Michel expressed their support to Kiev and pushed for strategic autonomy, transatlantic unity and the protection of the citizens’ rights and freedoms in Europe and around the world.

DEPA holds its first-ever congress

ALDE Party member Dimokratiki Parataxi (DEPA) held its first-ever congress on 20 February, ahead of Cyprus’ presidential elections to take place in February 2023. The congress confirmed the election of its new leadership, with Marios Garoyian as President. ALDE Party acting co-President Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP delivered a video message stressing DEPA’s momentum as a centrist political force in Cypriot politics.

Liberal forces unite in Bosnia Herzegovina

On 21 January, liberal forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina formally united after an agreement on joining the Liberal Democratic Party to Naša Stranka was signed. Both parties are ALDE Party members and share many core positions such as the defence of human and minority rights, the fight against organised crime and their support for a free economy, among others.

The Alliance Of Her Academy Class of 2022 is about to begin

On 22 February, the Alliance Of Her (AOH) announced its Class of 2022. This year the AOH is offering two classes for a combined 40 participants representing 25 member parties, making the 2022 class the biggest yet. To celebrate the European Year of Youth and expand the program, the AOH is partnering with LYMEC for the first time to deliver a class exclusively for politically active women between 18-30.

The ALDE Party Secretariat welcomes a new team member

Amy McAuley, from Ireland, joins the ALDE Party Secretariat as Youth Liaison Trainee and will be working with The European Liberal Youth (LYMEC) and with The Alliance of Her to support the 2022 Youth Academy and to improve the briefings to LYMEC’s member organisations and LYMEC’s advocacy efforts. Welcome Amy!

EU-Africa Partnership: Renew Europe ready to move forward

Last week, EU and African Union leaders met in Brussels, and Renew Europe welcomes the conclusions of the summit. EU-AU cooperation is critical for our shared future and both European and African partners put constructive dialogue at the heart of the summit, to build a stronger and more strategic partnership with a sense of belonging and inclusivity.

Philippines: The EU must not compromise on values

Renew Europe has called for immediate release of all prisoners detained by authorities in Philippines on politically motivated charges. In an urgency resolution debated in the European Parliament last week, MEPs denounced human rights abuses in the country and called on the European Commission to withdraw trade preferences if the situation does not improve.
