ALDE Party Congress 2023: As it happened

From 26 to 28 May, liberal leaders, European Commissioners, party leaders, decision-makers and other guests gathered in Stockholm, Sweden to discuss some of the most defining challenges of our time at the ALDE Party Congress. 

Below, you can find the highlights from this year’s Congress, as it happened.  

Commissioners Vestager and Jourová highlight priorities ahead of EP2024  

On the first day of the Congress, European Commission Executive Vice-President Margrethe Vestager and Vice-President Věra Jourová shared their perspectives on liberal footprints in the von der Leyen Commission. The conversation was moderated by ALDE Party Vice-President Svenja Hahn MEP and touched on issues such as climate change, rule of law and media freedom. 

ALDE Party Council welcomes new members in Stockholm 

During the ALDE Party Council meeting, delegates discussed membership developments and updates on the ALDE Party 2024 Manifesto, among other key issues on the liberal agenda. During the meeting, delegates welcomed two new full member parties: Fokus from Croatia and Coaliția pentru Unitate și Bunăstare from Moldova. 

Liberal leaders open ALDE Party Congress 

ALDE Party co-Presidents Senator Timmy Dooley and Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP hosted the official opening ceremony of the 2023 ALDE Party Congress in Stockholm. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined the opening ceremony through a video message. In his message, President Zelenskyy thanked for the support Ukraine has received and spoke on our shared European values.  

Moreover, Prime Ministers Kaja Kallas and Alexander De Croo delivered video messages, highlighting our common fight for liberal values ahead of the 2024 European elections, as well the unwavering liberal support for Ukraine and its people. First Vice-President of the Renew Europe Group Malik Azmani MEP underlined the importance of looking ahead in his remarks, and Swedish member party leaders Muharrem Demirok (Centerpartiet) and Johan Pehrson (Liberalerna) also took the stage, sharing Sweden’s prospective ahead of next year’s European elections.  

High-level panel debates discuss security and climate  

A high-level panel debate held during the ALDE Party Congress in Stockholm focused on Europe’s defence and security concerns, which are increasingly important priorities for Europeans, as evidenced by research conducted by the ALDE Party. Read more about the debate here.  

The second high-level panel debate focused on the impact the war in Ukraine has had on Europe’s green transition. Beyond increased energy prices and cost-of-living, the war has disrupted food and fertiliser markets and agricultural production. Find out the panellists’ liberal response to these challenges.  

Europe’s liberals elect new vice-presidents and treasurer to ALDE Party Bureau 

During ALDE Party Congress, three Vice Presidents and one Treasurer were elected to the ALDE Party Bureau. Congratulations to Malik Azmani (VVD, The Netherlands), Dan Barna (USR, Romania), Eva Kjer Hansen (Venstre, Denmark), the new Vice-Presidents, as well as David Burke (Fianna Fáil, Ireland) on his re-election as Treasurer.  

A range of resolutions adopted during Congress
