Strong liberal presence at first COFOE Plenary meeting

Citizens and representatives from European and national levels came together for the first Conference on the Future of Europe plenary meeting on 19 June to discuss key elements of the Conference. European liberals had a strong presence at the meeting and are committed to fostering an honest debate on the future of Europe. ALDE Party acting co-Presidents Timmy Dooley and Ilhan Kyuchyuk MEP attended a Caucasus meeting held in connection with the Plenary, organised by the Renew Europe Group.

ALDE Party General Affairs Ministers meet for the first time

Yesterday, ALDE Party and Renew Europe hosted the first-ever meeting of liberal ministers of General Affairs ahead of a GAC meeting. Following the Council, 14 EU Member States, at the initiative of Belgian liberal Minister Sophie Wilmès, adopted a joint statement condemning recent anti-LGBTIQ+ legislation in Hungary.

LibDems gain MP in ‘safe’ Conservative seat in big byelection surprise

The UK Liberal Democrats pulled off another byelection surprise win in the Buckinghamshire constituency of Chesham and Amersham on 17 June, overturning a large majority in an area long regarded as “safe seat” by the Conservative party, who has ruled there uncontested for over a Century. Liberal Democrat candidate Sarah Green secured 57% of the vote and a majority of her own of more than 8,000 votes.

Danish ALDE members join Folkemødet to discuss the future of politics

Last week, ALDE Party members Venstre and Radikale Venstre in Denmark joined the traditional political festival Folkemødet together with other Danish political parties and engaged citizens to discuss and debate some of the most pressing issues of our time. During the event, leaders of both parties gave speeches highlighting key challenges ahead. European Commission Executive Vice President Margrethe Vestager also joined the event, sharing her insights on the future of Europe.

Liberal opposition leader arrested in Nicaragua

The ALDE Party condemns the arrest of Félix Maradiaga, who is a close partner of FNF in Latin America and liberal opposition politician to the Ortega regime, and calls for the immediate release of Maradiaga and other opposition leaders.

Renew Europe CoR: local communities must be part of the Future of Europe

As part of the European Committee of the Regions delegation on the Conference on the Future of Europe, five members of Renew Europe CoR will aim to strengthen the role of local and regional authorities in the EU. Renew Europe CoR President and Mayor François Decoster will work to include two projects in the final conclusions of the COFOE: setting up an Erasmus for local and regional councillors and the establishment of EU councillors at local and regional levels.

Since September 2020, the innovative ALDE Party video series ‘Unique Stories of Liberals’ has highlighted liberal leaders at all levels of government and across Europe tackling the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in their own political contexts. And we are not done yet! More episodes on different themes are planned for this autumn, so stay tuned.

ALDE and IRI Roundtable - The Transatlantic Partnership

You can still register for ALDE Party’s and the International Republican Institute (IRI) closed-doors roundtable on the transatlantic partnership! During the event we will examine the opportunities under the new Biden administration for the US and Europe to chart a common path in rebalancing the trading relationship with China, address the impact of distortive trade practices and safeguard the respect for human rights, social and environmental protections. Registration is open until 25 June 2021

The chosen candidate will conduct research and analysis on political party performance, manage data analysis projects, develop ALDE Party analytics databases and assist the organisation of workshops, among other tasks. European liberals welcome EU sanctions against Lukashenka’s ‘sick’ regime

On 21 June, the Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament welcomed a deal by EU foreign ministers on sanctions targeting the Belarusian regime. European liberals have stood by the Belarusian people throughout this challenging time and recently adopted a resolution in response to recent developments at ALDE Party eCongress.

For Renew Europe, mobility cannot come at the cost of lives

Renew Europe is taking action to address road safety in Europe through the European Union Political Framework for Road Safety 2021-2030. This new report makes recommendations for achieving a “Vision Zero” of fatalities and serious injuries by 2050, based on three pillars: safer vehicles, safer roads and improved emergency services.
