Renew Europe elects Stéphane Séjourné as new President

On 19 October, Renew Europe MEPs elected Stéphane Séjourné as the new President of Renew Europe, the liberal political group in the European Parliament. Séjourné has sat in the European Parliament since 2019, and as President looks forward to continuing the success of Renew Europe as the leading pro-European force in the European Parliament and across the EU.

Estonians vote liberal in local elections

On 17 October, ALDE Party members Eesti Keskerakond and Eesti Reformierakond won 24.4% and 17.3% of the votes respectively in the Estonian local elections. The Centre Party became the most successful party with incumbent Tallin mayor Mihhail Kõlvart renewing his mandate. Prime Minister’s Kaja Kallas’ Reform Party was the second most successful party remaining strong despite the country’s undergoing reforms.

Impact of rule of law breaches on EU’s economic recovery under focus at Liberal Breakfast

Last week, ALDE Party and Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) hosted the first hybrid Liberal Breakfast of the season. During the event panelists Katalin Cseh MEP, Renew Europe Vice-President, and Olivier Salles, Head of Unit of Policy Coordination and Communication at the European Anti-Fraud Office, discussed the impacts of rule of law breaches on EU’s economic recovery after COVID-19.

Renew Europe CoR: new podcast episode is out!

This new episode, titled ‘The Crime & the Lone Crusader’, carries highlights of a highly tense debate in the October plenary of the CoR, led by Fianna Fáil’s Kate Feeney against the homophobic amendments by Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz members, as well as new proposals by MR’s Alexia Bertrand to empower consumers to make climate friendly choices when shopping.

Last week, Matej Hruška joined the ALDE Party Secretariat as Data Analyst. In this position, he will be part of the Research and Empowerment Unit, to which he will provide support through data research and analysis, and where he will develop new analytics and database solutions. Welcome!

Poland: European Council must defend primacy of EU law

Following the recent actions of Poland’s illegitimate Constitutional Tribunal, Renew Europe is deeply concerned that Polish citizens will no longer be guaranteed their rights and freedoms. Liberals in the European Parliament stand behind an upcoming resolution for the European Council to a joint declaration addressing the seriousness of this matter at the upcoming summit on 21-22 October.

Protect free speech and media freedom, demands Renew Europe

The Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament champions the protection of media freedom and media pluralism. With the adoption of an Anti-SLAPP report last week, Renew Europe MEPs have taken further measures protect and strengthen freedom of speech, media freedom and enhance the protection of journalists against strategic lawsuits against public participation.
