Liberal leaders show support to President Zelenskyy in Brussels

On 9 February, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy travelled to Brussels to meet with EU leaders during an Extraordinary European Council and address the European Parliament. During the visit, EU leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity and its right to self-defence, and agreed to increase collective pressure on Russia to end the war.

Viðreisn National Assembly elects leadership

Viðreisn, ALDE Party member in Iceland, held its congress on 10-11 February during which Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir was re-elected as chair of the party. Daði Már Kristófersson was re-elected as Vice President, and Sigmar Guðmundsson was elected to the newly-created position of Secretary of the Board. The Assembly passed a political resolution on improving health care and combating inflation.

DEPA-backed candidate wins Cyprus presidential election

Nikos Christodoulides won the second round of Cyprus’ presidential election on 5 February with 51.92% of the vote. He is set to take office as the country’s eighth and youngest President on 1 March. He ran as an independent candidate with the support of centrist parties such as ALDE Party member Dimokratiki Parataxi (DEPA).

Liberals of Andorra approve lists for upcoming elections

On 12 February, the Liberals, one of ALDE Party’s members in Andorra, held an Extraordinary Congress with more than 200 attendees to vote on the lists for the upcoming general election taking place on 2 April. Members ratified candidacies for the national list headed by Josep Maria Cabanes and the regional lists, in which Liberals will run together with Democrats.

Acció validates three electoral candidacies

Over the weekend, Acció, one of ALDE Party’s members in Andorra, held an Extraordinary General Assembly to validate their electoral lists for the upcoming general elections. The proposed lists were approved by acclamation. The national list will be headed by three women: Party Leader Judith Pallarés, Noelia Souque and Agustina Grandvallet. The party will also run with two regional lists.

ALDE Party Vice Presidents discuss life in Ukraine

Last week, ALDE Party Vice-Presidents Baroness Sal Brinton and Kira Rudik MP took part in an online event organised by the Liberal Democrats, one of ALDE Party’s member parties in the UK. During the event, Rudik talked about what life is like in Ukraine at the moment, highlighting how the country has lost 50% of its energy infrastructure, and Brinton raised the horrific issue of abducted children.

Renew Europe CoR: Love is love

This year on 14 February, Valentine’s Day, members of Renew Europe in the European Committee of the Regions (CoR) celebrated that love is love, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Over the past few years, Renew Europe CoR and its members have taken on a series of initiatives for LGBTIQ+ equality.

Revised energy legislation to enhance security and efficiency

Renew Europe welcomed last week’s endorsement of the recast of the Gas and Hydrogen Markets Regulation and Directive. The revised legislation aims to update the existing framework for access to natural gas infrastructure and foster the decarbonisation of the energy sector by ramping up production of renewable gases and hydrogen, facilitating their integration in EU energy networks.

Renew Europe: Sustainable buildings, sustainable future

Last week, Renew Europe welcomed the backing of the revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, a key driver within the framework of the Fit for 55 package to achieve a zero-emission building stock by 2050. Current EU building stock accounts for 40% of energy consumed and 36% of energy-related direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions.
