On 26-28 May, liberals from across Europe will gather in Stockholm for ALDE Congress to discuss and debate some of the defining challenges of our time. We will also hold elections for three Vice-President positions and Treasurer on the ALDE Party Bureau. Not able to join us? Liberals stand with LGBTQIA+ community at Pride

On Saturday 20 May, liberals in Belgium came together for Pride in Brussels to show their support for LGBTQIA+ rights in a parade and celebration across the city. European liberals took part in the Belgian Pride 2023 in cooperation with ALDE Party members Mouvement Réformateur and Open VLD, as well as LYMEC, liberal youth from Jeunes MR and Jong VLD and various ALDE Party member parties in Brussels.

Alliance Party continues to make gains in Northern Ireland

After weeks of campaigning, the votes have been counted and this year’s local elections in Northern Ireland have come to a close. With 54.71% voter turnout, ALDE Party member Alliance Party of Northern Ireland won 67 seats across nearly all of Northern Ireland’s 11 Local Councils. The party earned 13.3% of the total vote share, with a net gain of 14 seats from the 2019 local elections.

Progress on LGBTQIA+ rights in Baltics

On 15 May, the Government of Estonia, led by Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, approved a draft act amending the current Family Law Act and other legislation to establish marriage equality and implement a Registered Partnership Act in the country. In Lithuania, Parliament adopted the draft law for same-sex civil unions in another step forward for tolerance and diversity.

Alliance Of Her Spring Class of 2023 graduates

From 3-7 May, the Alliance Of Her Academy Spring Class of 2023 took part in their final graduation session. With a stellar line up of influential and expert speakers from across Europe, the final session had 22 women in politics from across Europe completing the academy after three sessions on political empowerment and leadership held throughout the first part of this year.

Critical Raw Materials: Secure and sustainable supplies needed

Critical raw materials are the lifeblood of the global transition to a digital and green economy. During this week’s meeting of the European Parliament Industry, Research and Energy Committee, Nicola Beer MEP set out guidelines for a European Critical Raw Materials Strategy to reduce the EU’s strategic dependencies and strengthen open strategic sovereignty in an increasingly volatile world economy.

Renew Europe sets priorities for EU Media Freedom Act

Independent journalism is a cornerstone of healthy democracies, but increasingly polarised political debates, erosion of trust in media, violence against journalists and an increase in hate speech pose new threats. To counter this, action is being taken at the EU level for a European Media Freedom Act and Renew Europe has set out five priorities for the Act.
