‘Hope Among Us’ – ALDE President concludes CALD General Assembly

In his intervention at the 13th General Assembly of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD), ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen praised CALD for giving prominence to Taiwan and sharing its experience tackling COVID-19 while respecting individual rights and civil liberties, and also gave his perspective on global political events and also on initiatives to address the pandemic.

Romania to vote in parliamentary elections this Sunday

On Sunday 6 December, Romanians will go to the polls to vote in the country’s parliamentary elections. ALDE Party member Uniunea Salvați România (USR) runs in a coalition entitled Alliance 2020 together with Partidul Libertății, Unității și Solidarității (PLUS). ALDE President Hans van Baalen has also expressed his support to USR and allies, underlining the importance of these elections to all liberals.

ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen was the guest speaker of the inaugural episode of a new podcast series called 'Human Rights in the 21st Century'. President van Baalen discussed the challenge that the COVID-19 pandemic has posed for democracies and shared his views on the EU member states which violate human rights, among others.

Dutch ALDE member party Democraten 66 held their Congress virtually on Saturday 28 November where they adopted their electoral manifesto ahead of the parliamentary elections in the Netherlands scheduled for March 2021.

FDP discusses German presidency with Reynders and Cseh

On 25 November, German ALDE member FDP hosted an event on the German EU Council presidency and the future of the EU: “Fast Forward or Business as usual?”. Co-hosted by ALDE Party Vice-President Alexander Graf Lamsdorff MdB, speakers included European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders and Katalin Cseh MEP of ALDE member Momentum in Hungary.

Liberal Mayors meet for their 7th Summit to discuss rule of law

More than 20 mayors from across Europe gathered on 26 November to discuss the rule of law and LGBTIQ rights with the European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová, Michal Šimečka MEP of Renew Europe, and Dirk Wedel, State Secretary, Ministry of Justice of North-Rhine Westphalia.

Liberal Breakfast on violence against women in politics kicks off ALDE campaign

Kicking off the ALDE Party ’16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence’ campaign on 25 November was a thematic Liberal Breakfast focusing on violence against women in politics, organised with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. Panellists discussed the need for positive role models, data about diversity, legal frameworks and safe spaces for victims of gender-based violence.

Renew Europe warns fundamental rights are at risk in the EU

On 24 November, MEPs debated a report on the state of play of fundamental rights in the EU. This year’s report warns that fundamental rights are at risk across the EU, and in response the Renew Europe Group reiterated its long-standing demand for an EU mechanism on democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights.

Violence against women has no place in the EU

One in three women have been victims of physical or sexual violence, and since the outbreak of COVID-19, the scale of violence has intensified. Renew Europe has demanded coordinated action on the EU level to combat this issue, and recently launched a plan to combat violence against women during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.
