ALDE Party Co-Presidents statement on the death of Alexei Navalny

ALDE Party Co-Presidents Ilhan Kyuchyuk and Timmy Dooley paid tribute to Alexei Navalny's legacy and determination following news of his death.“We strongly condemn the sad news of the death of Alexei Navalny, who has been detained and subjected to harsh treatment in prison since January 2021 and faced more than 30 years of a politically-motivated sentence," they said.

European liberals react to Navalny’s death

Liberal leaders and parties across Europe expressed their widespread condemnation at the news of Alexei Navalny’s death on 16 February. ALDE Party member Yabloko in Russia said that the responsibility for Navalny’s death lies with the Russian authorities, and demanded an immediate end to the persecution of dissidents.

Liberals call for unity at Munich Security Conference

On 16-18 February, world leaders and key policymakers gathered for the 60th Munich Security Conference for discussions on the most pressing international security concerns. The high-level event in Germany was held under the motto “Lose-Lose?”, focusing on fears that with high geopolitical tensions many governments are no longer focusing on the advantages of global cooperation.

Join our event in Sofia to discuss a liberal Europe

On 16-17 March, ALDE Party will host an event entitled “Europe as we see it: moving forward the liberal way” in Sofia, Bulgaria. The event aims to build upon the discussions held at ALDE Party's Manifesto town hall event in Sofia in June 2023, and kickstart further dialogue on the liberal vision for the European Union beyond the upcoming elections on 6-9 June.

Last week, we welcomed Dorin Frăsîneanu as ALDE Party’s new Policy Officer, part of the Policy & Membership Affairs Unit. Dorin will be responsible for monitoring political and key policy developments, facilitate the exchange of policy ideas and best practices among member parties, shaping and promoting ALDE Party’s narrative, presence, and influence on the European stage.

On 18-19 March, the European Committee of the Regions will host the 10th Summit of Cities and Regions in Mons, Belgium. The event will feature several sessions with high-level speakers from our political family, including Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, Renew Europe President Valérie Hayer and Renew Europe CoR President François Decoster.

Renew Europe: Moving towards full decarbonisation

Renew Europe welcomed the inter-institutional agreement reached between EU legislators on 19 January on a European certification framework for carbon removals. The proposed law sets out EU-wide rules for measuring and accounting the capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, providing an additional tool to avoid the worst outcomes of climate disruption.
